11 TYPES OF CDS: WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE – FORBES ADVISOR

  • Regular CDs. Regular CDs, also known as traditional CDs or fixed-rate CDs, are the simplest type of CD. With these, you deposit a certain amount of money for a certain length of time (the “term”), and the bank or credit union pays you a fixed rate of interest for the length of that term.
  • Bump-Up CDs. A bump-up CD gives you the option to switch to a higher APY during the term of your CD, at no extra charge and with no extra commitment.
  • Step-Up CDs. Step-up CDs work in a similar way to bump-up CDs, but instead of your having to ask the bank or credit union to raise your APY, with a step-up CD, it happens automatically.
  • Brokered CDs. Brokered CDs are purchased from a brokerage firm or independent salespeople, and are often held in a brokerage account. These CDs also may have longer terms, in some cases up to 20 or 30 years.
  • High-Yield CDs. Just as some banks offer high-yield savings accounts that promise a higher APY than typical bank savings accounts, some banks also offer high-yield CDs that pay a generous APY.
  • Jumbo CDs. If you have a significant amount of cash to put into a CD, you might want to invest in a Jumbo CD. This type of CD generally requires a “jumbo”-sized minimum deposit of $100,000.
  • No-Penalty CDs. No-penalty CDs won’t charge you an early withdrawal penalty if you need to access your money before the CD’s maturity date.
  • IRA CDs. IRA CDs let you purchase CDs as part of your individual retirement account (IRA). How it works. Depending on your age, risk tolerance and investment time horizon, IRA CDs may be a smart addition to your retirement planning strategy.
  • Add-On CDs. Add-on CDs are another special type of CD that allows you to “add on” more money by making additional deposits during the CD term.
  • Foreign Currency CDs. Foreign currency CDs are issued in foreign currency, such as Euros or British Pounds. How it works. Foreign currency CDs let you save and invest in other countries’ currencies, potentially making money on the rise or fall of the value of the U.S. dollar.

12 TYPES OF CDS: WHICH IS BEST? | BANKRATE
FREE From bankrate.com
...
Estimated Reading Time 8 mins
  • Traditional CD. With a traditional CD, you make a one-time deposit that meets the bank’s minimum opening deposit requirement. The money stays with your bank for a specific term and earns a fixed interest rate.
  • Bump-up CD. A bump-up CD helps you benefit from a rising-rate environment. Suppose you open a two-year CD at a given rate, and six months into the term your bank raises the annual percentage yield (APY) on that product.
  • Step-up CDs. Like a bump-up CD, a step-up CD lets you move to a higher yield. But unlike a bump-up CD, you don’t have to ask the bank for the higher rate; a step-up CD rate rises automatically by a predetermined amount at certain intervals during the term.
  • Liquid (or no-penalty) CD. Liquid CDs, or no-penalty CDs, allow investors to withdraw money before the CD term ends without incurring a penalty. The APY tied to a liquid CD may be higher than the yield on a savings or money market account, but it will likely be lower than the rate on a traditional CD of the same term.
  • Zero-coupon CD. With zero-coupon CDs, you buy the CD at a discount to its par value, which is its value at maturity. Coupon refers to a periodic interest payment, so zero-coupon means there are no interest payments during the CD term.
  • Callable CD. With a callable CD, there is an opportunity to earn higher interest, but it comes with a risk: The issuer of a callable CD has the option to “call” back the CD after a set time, before it matures.
  • Brokered CD. A brokered CD is sold through a brokerage firm. To get one, you need a brokerage account. Buying CDs through a brokerage can be convenient because you don’t have to open CDs at a variety of banks to get the best yields.
  • High-yield CD. Banks compete for deposits by offering better-than-average rates. High-yield CDs are generally traditional CDs that pay better returns.
  • Jumbo CD. Just as its name implies, a jumbo CD requires a larger deposit than a traditional CD — typically, $100,000. In some instances, the deposit requirement is somewhat lower.
  • IRA CD. An IRA CD is a CD that is held in a tax-advantaged individual retirement account. IRA CDs may appeal to the risk-averse who want to build their retirement savings with guaranteed returns.
